Water erosion prediction using Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation and GIS: A case study of Gorganrud Basin
Authors
Abstract:
Soil erosion and sedimentation processes can be considered as serious eco-environmentalproblems. This study aimed to estimate the basin-wide erosion using the Revised UniversalSoil Loss Equation (RUSLE). The soil erosion parameters included rainfall erosivity mapgenerated from the rainfall data, soil erodibility extracted from the soil map, land cover andmanagement map produced from supervised classification of Landsat ETM+ data, and aDigital Elevation Model (DEM) to generate the slope length and steepness factor (LS)maps. Support practice map was assumed as 1 as there were no significant conservationpractices. Then, the six thematic layers were integrated based on RUSLE model in GISenvironment, and the spatial distribution of soil loss in the Gorganrud Basin was achieved. The distribution of erosion risk was 42.5% for low, 30.33% for moderate, and 27.17% forsevere classes. The highest amount of erosion occurred in the northwest to northeast andeastern regions with lithological units including loess, young terraces and alluvial depositsand agricultural use despite the fact that LS factors in these areas were less than 10. In thecentral and southern parts of the basin, in spite of the high values of LS factor (15–55),these areas depicted low to moderate erosion potential. This is supposed to be due to thedense forest coverage in the region that decreases the energy of rain droplets. The soilerosion risk map can be used for rapid assessment of the effects of environmental changesand watershed management interventions.

Assessment of Soil Erosion Susceptibility in Kothagiri Taluk Using Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) and Geo-Spatial Technology
Soil erosion is a serious environmental problem in Kothagiri Taluk. Many studies have been carried out to map shifting cultivation and areas susceptible to soil erosion. Mostly, estimated soil loss is taken as the basis to classify the level of soil loss susceptibility of area. The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) function is a commonly used erosion model for this purpose in Kothagi...
full textPredicting soil erosion in conservation tillage cotton production systems using the revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE)
Despite being one of the most pro®table crops for the southeastern USA, cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is considered to create a greater soil erosion hazard than other annual crops such as corn (Zea mays L.) and soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). Reduced tillage systems and cover cropping can reduce soil erosion and leaching of nutrients into ground water. The objectives of this study, which wa...
full textApplication of Gully and Rill Erosion Indicators for Estimating Soil Loss Using GIS Techniques
The problems of land degradation and soil loss are among the major problems of watersheds in Iran. For erosion andsediment estimation one can use statistical and empirical methods. For doing this, land unit map and the map of effectivefactors should be prepared. For erosion and sediment estimation one can use statistical and empirical methods. However, these empirical methods are usually time co...

full textEstimating of erosion and sediment yield of Gorganrud basin using erosin potential method
Soil erosion can be considered as one of the most important obstacles in the way of sustainable development of agriculture and natural resources. The aim of this study is to estimate erosion and sediment yield of basin using Erosion Potential Method, in Gorganrud basin, north of Iran. The main factors in the EPM (slope average percent, erosion, rock and soil resistance, and land-use) were evalu...
full textGis-based Approach for Change and Prediction of Soil Erosion
The paper has the goal to evaluate if the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE)applied using thematic paper maps and a DEM is sufficient to generate a model to map and predict the influences on the environment caused by soil erosion on Loess Plateau. Factors of USLE R, K, S, L, P as well as C were adapted to the test area, the Nihe Gou catchment in Chunhua County in Shaanxi. Afterwards the parame...
